Rebar estimating software for reinforcing takeoff and pricing
Rebar estimating software takes off reinforcing steel by structure and bar size, calculates lengths with laps, hooks and stock lengths, and totals the weight in pounds or tons for material and placing labor. aSa Estimating is a rebar-specific tool that calculates common structures such as linear and rectangular areas, ties, stirrups and spirals1; concrete takeoff tools like STACK, PlanSwift and ScopeTakeoff also calculate rebar from concrete assemblies357. aSa does not publish prices1; STACK, PlanSwift and ScopeTakeoff do468.
What a rebar takeoff measures
| Item | Unit | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Footing and grade beam bars | LF by bar size, converted to LB | Longitudinal bars run with laps at stock length; transverse bars are spaced at the detailed spacing. Hooks and bends add length. |
| Wall reinforcing | LF and LB by size and face | Vertical and horizontal bars, each face where the detail calls for two curtains, plus dowels to the footing and corner bars. |
| Slab reinforcing | LB, or SF for mesh | Top and bottom mats each way, additional bars at openings and re-entrant corners, and chairs or supports by area. |
| Columns and beams | LB and EA | Vertical bars with splices and ties or spirals by spacing. Stirrups in beams change spacing near supports. |
| Dowels, embeds and accessories | EA and LB | Dowels at construction joints, couplers, chairs, tie wire and caps. Small items that add up. |
| Placing labor | Hours or cost per ton | Light bars and congested elements take more hours per ton than heavy straight bars in footings. |
How a rebar estimate is built
- Read the structural general notes for cover, lap lengths, hook standards and bar grade, and set them as job defaults before measuring anything.
- Take off by structure (footings, walls, slabs, columns, beams), entering dimensions and bar spacings so the software calculates pieces and lengths.
- Let the software add laps at stock length, hooks and bends, then review the bar list by mark for anything unusual.
- Add dowels, corner bars, opening bars, mesh and accessories from the details.
- Summarize weight by bar size and by element, apply waste and scrap, and price material per ton or per hundredweight from current mill or supplier pricing.
- Calculate placing labor by element type and productivity, and if you also detail and fabricate, carry the estimate forward into detailing and order entry.
What to look for in rebar software
Structure-based takeoff
Rebar is faster to estimate by structure than bar by bar. Look for functions that calculate a whole footing, wall or slab from dimensions, spacing and bar size.
Job-level defaults
Cover, laps, stock lengths and hook rules change by project. Setting them once per job keeps every element consistent.
Weight summaries by size and element
Mill pricing and placing labor both depend on bar size and element type. The report should total by both.
Connection to detailing
For fabricators, the estimate should carry into detailing, bar lists and production so the estimated tonnage can be compared to detailed and shipped weight.

Rebar estimating for fabricators vs concrete contractors
Fabricators and rebar subcontractors estimate to buy steel, schedule shop time and price placing, so they need bar-level accuracy, stock length optimization and a path into detailing and production. That is what aSa's integrated estimating, detailing and production modules are built for2.
Concrete contractors who furnish and install, or who need a check on a fabricator's number, usually only need tonnage by element. A concrete takeoff tool that calculates rebar from the same footing and wall assemblies is often enough, with the fabricator's quote as the final price.
Footing rebar as the grounding electrode: the stub-up bar
On many buildings the footing reinforcing doubles as the grounding electrode, which puts the rebar placer and the electrical contractor on the same bars. The 2023 NEC text of 250.68(C)(3) lets an additional rebar section run from a concrete-encased electrode to an accessible location for the grounding electrode conductor connection10. That extra bar has to be continuous with the electrode rebar or joined to it with the usual steel tie wires, welding or another effective means, and it cannot touch the earth without corrosion protection10.
The bar itself is a few feet of steel, but it falls between scopes. The structural drawings rarely show it, the electrical drawings show a grounding detail with no bar mark, and the placing crew is gone by the time the electrician arrives. Ask before bid day who furnishes and places the stub-up, and where it comes out: it needs to land inside the wall or room where the service equipment will sit, not in the middle of a slab. Electrical estimators can carry it as a line on their takeoff sheet so it is priced by someone.
Pools are the other place reinforcing becomes part of an electrical system: the 2023 NEC ties perimeter bonding to the pool reinforcing steel at no fewer than four points around a conductive shell11, which the pool estimating page covers. Grounding items like these are part of every electrical estimate, even though AmpCount, which counts devices and fixtures on electrical sheets, has nothing to count on a foundation plan.
Where rebar takeoffs go wrong
- Missing lap splices where bars exceed stock length, which understates weight on every long run.
- Counting one curtain of wall reinforcing when the detail shows each face.
- Bars at openings, re-entrant corners and thickened slab edges that only appear in typical details, not on the plan.
- Taking spacing literally without adding the extra bar at the end of each run (pieces equal length divided by spacing, plus one).
- Pricing placing labor at a flat cost per ton when the job is mostly light, congested bars in walls and columns.
Trades that bid the same job
A rebar bid rarely stands alone. The trades next to it on the schedule read the same drawings and often share scope lines, so it pays to know how they take off too: concrete estimating software, masonry estimating software and steel detailing software.
Where AmpCount fits
AmpCount only counts electrical devices and fixtures, so it does not take off reinforcing steel. Rebar estimators and electrical estimators meet only at coordination points like embedded conduit and grounding connections to rebar, which the electrical contractor carries in its own scope.
Questions
What software do rebar estimators use?
Fabricators and rebar subs can use a rebar-specific tool such as aSa Estimating, part of aSa's wider rebar software12. Concrete contractors often estimate rebar inside concrete takeoff tools such as STACK, PlanSwift or ScopeTakeoff357. Detailers modeling in 3D use tools such as Tekla Structures9.
How is rebar weight calculated in an estimate?
Total the length of each bar size, including laps and hooks, and multiply by that size's weight per foot from the bar standard used on the project, then sum by size and element and add waste.
How much does rebar estimating software cost?
aSa does not publish prices1. Concrete tools that also handle rebar publish theirs: STACK has a free plan and paid plans at $299 and $349 per user per month billed annually4, ScopeTakeoff is $100 per person per month8, and PlanSwift is $2,000 or $3,000 per seat per year6.
Can rebar be estimated from the concrete takeoff?
Yes, for budget and check estimates. Assembly-based tools calculate bars from the same element dimensions. For a fabrication bid, a bar-level takeoff with job-specific laps, hooks and stock lengths is safer.
