A Bluebeam alternative for counting electrical devices

Bluebeam Revu is a PDF markup and collaboration tool from $260 to $590 per user per year1, and you can count devices in it with VisualSearch and Count markups: search for one symbol, review the results and select each one to count2. AmpCount skips the search step: it pulls every symbol from the legend, counts all of them on every sheet, puts doubtful marks in a review list and compares fixtures with the schedule, for $149 a month for up to 3 people.

What Bluebeam is

Bluebeam sells four annual plans per user: Basics ($260), Core ($330), Complete ($440) and Max ($590, introductory)1. Count measurements start at Core, and Complete adds Quantity Link to Excel1. To count symbols, you use VisualSearch on a symbol, which can search at several rotations, then select each result you want in your Count markup2.

Where Bluebeam is strong

  • PDF markups, drawing overlays and comparison, and Studio collaboration1.
  • Measures lengths, areas, perimeters and volumes as well as counts1, which puts it among the construction takeoff tools used across trades.
  • Every plan includes Revu for Windows plus Bluebeam on web and mobile1.
  • Plans you probably already pay for.

Where AmpCount is different

Counting without searching symbol by symbol

In Bluebeam you search and select per symbol type2. AmpCount takes every symbol from the legend and counts all of them on all sheets at once.

Type tags and the fixture schedule

AmpCount reads type tags like A2 or B1 and the fixture schedule, and tells you when the schedule says 44 and the plans show 47, with the sheet to open.

A review list, not a scavenger hunt

Anything AmpCount isn't sure about lands in one uncertain list. Confirm or dismiss with a key press, and every count links back to its marks.

Use it next to Bluebeam

Keep Bluebeam for markups and measurements. Use AmpCount for the device and fixture counts, and export them to Excel.

The matching is plain geometry, step by step, as shown in how AmpCount works. A vision model helps read titles, legends and schedules but never confirms a mark or counts, as the AI electrical takeoff guide explains.

Where the time goes counting in Bluebeam

Counting in Bluebeam is search and select. You draw a box around one symbol, VisualSearch looks for similar ones on the sheet at several rotations, and you tick the results you want in a Count markup2. It's much faster than clicking each device, but it's per symbol and per pass: receptacles, then GFCIs, then floor boxes, then each fixture type, with a check of every result and a second look for anything the search missed, which Bluebeam's own guide says can happen2.

AmpCount starts from the legend instead of a search box. It already knows every symbol on the set, counts all of them on every sheet, and leaves you one list of uncertain marks to confirm. Fixture counts are matched against the schedule automatically, a step that isn't part of Bluebeam's Count workflow2.

Cost for a 3-person team

Bluebeam lists Core at $330 and Complete at $440 per user per year, billed annually, as of November 1, 20261. Three estimators on Core is $990 a year, or $1,320 on Complete if you want Quantity Link to Excel1. You likely already pay this for markups and collaboration, and you should keep doing so. Shops that only measure and count sometimes look at no-cost PDF takeoff tools instead, which trade Studio collaboration for a lower bill.

AmpCount adds $149 a month for up to 3 people, or $1,490 a year on the yearly plan, which is $500 more than three Core seats. What you buy is time, and an estimator's hourly cost is what makes that time worth buying: instead of a VisualSearch per symbol type and a pass to select results on every sheet, the count is done when the upload finishes, and your review is the short uncertain list plus the schedule check.

Run the numbers for your shop

Bluebeam plus AmpCount

  1. Upload the same vector PDF set you open in Bluebeam.
  2. Let AmpCount count every device and fixture and check the fixture schedule.
  3. Review the uncertain list, then export counts to Excel.
  4. Keep using Bluebeam for markups, conduit runs, areas and coordination.

Pricing the counts by hand for now? The electrical estimate template and the electrical estimate calculator take quantities straight from the export.

Before you switch

  • Keep your Bluebeam plans. AmpCount doesn't replace markups, measurements or Studio.
  • Note any sets where you had to lower VisualSearch sensitivity because they were scanned. AmpCount won't count those sheets.
  • Run one bid you counted in Bluebeam through AmpCount and compare totals per device type.
  • Decide where the final counts live: an Excel estimating workbook, your estimating software, or both.

Choose Bluebeam if

  • You need a general PDF tool for markups, measurements and collaboration with the GC.
  • Counts are a small part of your takeoff, or you mostly measure lengths and areas. If measuring is all you need, a one-time license such as Easy PDF Takeoff's Windows app costs less than a yearly Revu seat134.

Choose AmpCount if

  • You spend hours counting devices and fixtures with VisualSearch every bid.
  • You want the fixture schedule cross-checked and a clear list of what to review.
  • You want counts for the whole team for one monthly price.

Questions

Can't Bluebeam count symbols automatically?

Bluebeam's VisualSearch finds similar symbols on a sheet, and you select each result to include in a Count markup2. AmpCount counts every symbol from the legend on every sheet without searching per symbol, and flags uncertain ones for review.

Do I have to stop using Bluebeam?

No. Many contractors keep Bluebeam for markups and measurements and use AmpCount only for device and fixture counts. Counts are one step; the electrical estimating process still runs through labor, material pricing and bid review after them.

How much does Bluebeam cost?

Bluebeam lists Basics at $260, Core at $330, Complete at $440 and Max at $590 per user per year, billed annually, as of November 1, 20261. Count measurements start at Core1.

Does AmpCount work with scanned PDFs?

No. It needs vector PDFs, the kind exported from Revit or AutoCAD. Bluebeam suggests lowering VisualSearch sensitivity for PDFs made from scans2; AmpCount flags scanned sheets instead of guessing.

Can I still mark up the same PDF in Bluebeam?

Yes. AmpCount never changes your PDF. Upload a copy, keep marking up the original in Bluebeam, and use AmpCount's counts in your estimate.

Does AmpCount handle rotated symbols?

Yes. Symbols are matched in every 90 degree rotation and mirrored, so receptacles drawn along vertical walls are counted like the rest.
