Countertop estimating software from sketch to slab count
Countertop estimating software lets a fabricator draw the tops, then calculates square footage, edge profiles by linear foot, cutouts by count and backsplash, and estimates how many slabs the job needs. Better tools show the layout on the actual slab so seams and vein direction are planned before the quote. Fabricators usually pair the quoting tool with job scheduling and slab inventory.
What a countertop takeoff measures
| Item | Unit | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Countertop area | SF | Measured from the drawing or template, by material. Price lists are usually per square foot by material group. |
| Edge profiles | LF | Finished edges only. Each profile has its own price per foot; walls and appliances get no finished edge. |
| Cutouts | EA | Undermount sink, drop-in sink, cooktop, faucet holes and outlets are priced each. |
| Backsplash | LF / SF | Standard splash by length; full-height splash by area. |
| Slabs | EA | Comes from the layout, not the area. Piece sizes, seams and veining decide slab count. |
| Seams | EA | Seam count and location affect labor and the customer's approval. |
| Install and tear-out | EA / SF | Delivery, install, tear-out of existing tops and plumbing disconnects if in scope. |
How a countertop estimate is built
- Draw the tops from the cabinet drawing, a field measure or the template.
- Assign material, thickness, edge profiles and backsplash.
- Add cutouts and special features from the sink and appliance list.
- Lay the pieces on slabs to confirm slab count, seam locations and vein direction.
- Apply the price list: area by material group, edges per foot, cutouts each, plus install.
- Send the quote; after approval, schedule templating, fabrication and install.
- Confirm or reserve slabs in inventory so the quoted material is available.
What to look for in countertop software
Fast drawing tool
Fabricators quote many small jobs; drawing the tops must take minutes, including from a cabinet plan.
Slab layout
Seeing pieces on the slab estimates slab count and lets you plan seams and vein matching before you price.
Your price lists
Material groups, edge profiles and cutouts should price automatically from lists you maintain.
Connection to scheduling and inventory
Quotes become jobs with templating, fabrication and install dates, and slabs need to be tracked.

Residential fabricators vs multi-family and commercial bids
A residential fabricator quotes one kitchen at a time, often the same day, so drawing speed and a clear quote matter most. Moraware's CounterGo is built for that drawing and quoting step and connects to its scheduling product1.
Multi-family and commercial stone bids are takeoffs from drawings with dozens of repeated units. MeasureSquare positions its Stone edition for those projects, with slab optimization across many units2. The units and pricing are the same; the volume and the source document are different.
Why slab layout belongs in the quote
Square footage tells you what the customer is buying; slab layout tells you what you have to buy. An L-shaped kitchen with an island can fit on two slabs or need three, depending on piece sizes, seam rules and how the veining has to run. Quoting from area alone works for solid-color materials and goes wrong on natural stone with strong movement.
That is why both CounterGo and Slabsmith show pieces on slab material13, and Slabsmith adds remnant tracking3 so leftover pieces can be used on small jobs. Moving the layout step into the quote means the customer approves seams before templating, not after.
Island receptacles and countertop cutouts under the 2023 NEC
Kitchen islands changed in the 2023 NEC, and the change lands on the fabricator's template. Receptacles serving an island or peninsula are now optional, but where none is installed, provisions must be made at the island for adding one later. Where one is installed, it must sit on or above the countertop, no more than 20 inches above it, or in the countertop using a receptacle outlet assembly listed for countertops. The below-counter placement the 2020 edition allowed is gone4.
In practice that means more pop-up and flush receptacle assemblies cut into stone and quartz, and the cutout size comes from the assembly's own instructions, not from a standard outlet. Get the model number before templating, mark the location on the template, and price it as its own cutout. Full-height stone backsplashes have the same issue with wall receptacles: each one is a cutout that must line up with a box the electrician set before the stone arrived. Which edition your jurisdiction has adopted decides which rules apply, so confirm it on every multi-family bid.
On larger projects, ask the electrical contractor for the countertop receptacle list from their electrical estimate instead of finding each one on the drawings. Box positions are fixed at rough-in, so compare that list with your shop drawings before fabrication, while moving a box is still a small job. The estimating guides on this site explain how electrical contractors build that count.
Where countertop takeoffs go wrong
- Quoting slabs from area alone, which understates material when pieces do not nest.
- Charging finished edge on sides that sit against a wall or appliance, or missing edges that are exposed.
- Forgetting cutouts for faucets, soap dispensers or outlets in the backsplash.
- Not confirming seam locations with the customer before fabrication.
- Quoting a material that is not in stock or has a long lead time.
Trades that bid the same job
A countertop bid rarely stands alone. The trades next to it on the schedule read the same drawings and often share scope lines, so it pays to know how they take off too: cabinet estimating software, flooring estimating software, remodeling estimating software and plumbing estimating software.
Where AmpCount fits
AmpCount only counts electrical devices and fixtures, so it does not draw or price countertops. Backsplash receptacles and pop-up outlets shown on commercial electrical plans are counted by AmpCount for the electrical contractor; the fabricator still has to confirm cutout locations with the field.
Questions
How are countertops priced?
Most fabricators price area per square foot by material group, finished edges per linear foot, cutouts each, and installation, with slab count checked by layout.
How do you estimate how many slabs a countertop needs?
Lay the pieces on the slab size you will buy. Area alone understates slabs because pieces do not nest perfectly and seams and veining limit placement.
What does CounterGo cost?
Moraware publishes $100 per user per month for CounterGo, billed monthly with no long-term contract1.
Can flooring software estimate countertops?
MeasureSquare sells a Stone & Tile edition for countertops and tile with slab optimization2. General flooring editions are built for floors.
